In fact, Clines does a fine job of addressing this approach within the story itself. “The Fold” is not dense or jargon-heavy you won't need a scientific dictionary or a crash course in physics to understand it. However, when things start to go undeniably wrong, Mike's mental gymnastics offer a unique lifeline, and he is effectively welcomed onto the team. As time goes on, he learns more about the Door and the people involved, and he is tolerated if not embraced. The others initially resent Mike's presence despite the fact that their funding depends upon his support. Why does the team need yet another year for testing? Why are they so secretive and vague about how the technology works? Mike is sent in to investigate and evaluate. The project will flounder if it doesn't receive more funding from DARPA, but Magnus has a feeling that something isn't quite right. Hundreds of tests have been completed, and the Door is a success, or so it seems. This time, however, he's found something to engage Mike's interest: a groundbreaking experiment with potentially world-changing implications.Ī group of insular scientists and researchers has created a portal named the “Albuquerque Door” that is capable of moving matter through space in a new way: It “folds” the space between two points, allowing for instantaneous travel by simply crossing the threshold. His friend Reginald Magnus works for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and has been trying, without success, to recruit Mike for various DARPA projects. Leland “Mike” Erikson has a sky-high IQ and an eidetic memory - two characteristics that would make him a superstar in any endeavor - but he prefers the low-key life of a high school teacher. It's not a bad ending but it doesn't scream originality either. Unfortunately, the showdown in the final third of the book doesn't quite live up to the promising premise. The novel is accessible and approachable and built upon an intriguing concept.
